I've been cycling for years and my wife & I can both remember the day that Greg LeMond was the first American to win the Tour de France! (For instance, my wife remembers being in a cafeteria eating breakfast at the University of Oregon for a Summer Architecture Academy.) Of course we watched as Lance Armstrong won every single one of his seven Tour de France titles. My place of employment is about 28 miles away, if I take a direct route, and I usually try to be there between 7:00am & 7:30am. The ride takes about 40 minutes, which means I am leaving the house in the dark and get to the office around sun-up. This is a perfect part of the day to ride as I love watching the sun Kewanehhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17848904157264916052noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258562225254687582.post-80746150630738553192008-10-24T20:01:00.000-07:002008-10-24T23:56:05.505-07:00Bicycle CommunityA blogger in Holland has posted about how the bicycle is a staple in Dutch daily life. Cars are prominent, as are motorcycles, but bicycles are much more than they are here in the U.S. Bicycles (and motorcycles) are a commonly used, and accepted form of transportation. When I was in Amsterdam in 1985 (has it really been that long?) bicycles were everywhere, and there were places for them Kewanehhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17848904157264916052noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258562225254687582.post-61834269418680031582008-10-19T21:53:00.000-07:002008-10-27T16:49:57.567-07:00'Cool' has limitationsI've lost track of how many times I've been asked by someone, 'Which bicycle is best for me?' I usually reply with a couple of questions, the first of which is always, 'What kind of riding do you intend to do?' Most people don't know what kind of riding they'll be doing, but they've usually already got an idea of what kind of bike they want. Often times what they want, and what they want it Kewanehhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17848904157264916052noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258562225254687582.post-44153612799536562702008-10-11T22:19:00.000-07:002008-10-11T22:36:54.810-07:00Bicycle or Drive?A few years ago - 1988 to be exact - I needed to renew my drivers license. I rode my bicycle to get it done. I rode my bike everywhere; drove if I had to. I didn't know I'd be getting a new picture for my license. I'd bet there aren't many other people who are wearing a cycling jersey in their drivers license photo.I was pretty proud of that. Of course it's not really true, but I think she'd rather have me on the bicycle. When I'm on a bicycle, I'm getting exercise and helping the environment. A motorcycle just burns fuel and tires. Some tanks net a bit more between fill-ups, some a bit less, but their combined average is right at 42mpg. Three of those tanks have netted less than 36 mpg. One less than 33 mpg.I usually let the tank run about 3/4 of the way down to near empty (and into the flashing bar) between fill-ups, with Kewanehhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17848904157264916052noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258562225254687582.post-8507693372334605042008-09-27T21:43:00.000-07:002008-10-27T16:49:57.569-07:00The First 5000 Miles. This past Thursday I hit 5000 miles on the ST. Not 5000 on the odometer, but 5000 miles since I've had it. For those of you who may be counting, the bike had 376 miles on it when I got it, meaning I passed 5376 miles on the odometer. Much of the discussion on the Internet says that it's in the range of 6%-8% generous. I know that when my speedometer shows 80 mph, I'm actually only doing about 75+/- mph. That works out to be about 6%-7% for me.Although all the discussions I've read have been about the speedometer, I've read very little about Kewanehhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17848904157264916052noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258562225254687582.post-3697768534229137762008-09-20T17:00:00.000-07:002008-10-23T08:13:43.528-07:00Saturday RideI went on a ride with some friends today.
